Four Amigos

12" x 12" Oil on canvas

$350. + S/H

Same trail as last week, and the MOON was really there when I
started earlier! The foreground was completely in shadow, and
I blocked it in, then went down the hill to retrieve my camera,
and voila the light was now hitting the tops of the brush. I hadn't
figured on so much detail when I selected this spot, and not sure
it isn't too polka dotted. These plein air studies make for good
source material for larger ones though and the photos can be a help.
The skies a little too wet to finish, so I'll give it a day or two.

And my guest painter with me today was good Vermont friend,
Warren Kimble!

He's never been painting en plein air, so it was a real honor
to have his trust ON THE TRAIL!

He's having his first major retrospective this summer at the
Shelburne Museum in Vermont. He was out in here in Arizona
having a solo show at the Robert Roman Gallery in Scottsdale.

Maynard's Clouds

6" x 6" Oil

$99. + S/H

A simplified depiction of Maynard Dixon's 1920's painting
that struck me for the dynamic simplicity of design as well
as the bold color.

Big View

9" x 12" Oil on canvas on wood panel

$350. + S/H

I changed the mountain colors to read better.
That's the advantage of looking at your old paintings, every
now and again, you figure out a better solution.
I'm continually intrigued by how much to simplify
of the growth and shapes in the pictoral image.
I think this one has some more to be simplified

Canyon Wall

16" x 20" Oil on canvas

$675 +S/H

First version posted 1.25.08.

Canyon colors and depth continue to inspire.

Well I did something pretty stupid on Wednesday.
I lost my two paintings that I just posted this week.
They were in two pizza boxes to travel in the car...
& ended up left by the driveway where I unloaded.
I had a few trips to my studio, and was sidetracked
before the last load: the paintings!
SO, the good news was I photographed and posted them...
the bad news is they are either in some dumpster,
or on someone's walls (I hope the latter).

Valley View

10" x 10" Oil on MDF board (Medium Density Fiber)
Painting on location, en plein air, is a real joy.
Who could think up this landscape?
All's right with the world when I'm out painting.

Lone Soldier

8" x 10" Oil on canvas board

Here's the location where I was today,
and popped off this study.
It has possibilities for another painting.
The saguaro are so stately in the desert landscape, and challenging to fit into paintings for me.

Canyon Shadow

10" x 10" Oil on masonite

$125 + S/H

This was from sunrise at Bulldog Canyon
and I enjoyed the freshness of the brush quality
and range of blues and decided to not work into it
more and possibly deaden it.

Grand Canyon Dusk

24 " x 24" Oil on canvas

This was posted last year about this time, and went to
a gallery that closed in the fall when the owner retired,
so it's back in my studio again.
I'm thinking of painting a rectangular one a bit larger.

$1900. + S/H

Feathered Hats

36" x 36" Oil on birch cradled panel

This image is from a well known Edward Curtis photo
that I juxtaposed with Vermeer's The Girl with the Red Hat.
Since I came to Scottsdale Arizona, I am so surrounded by
"cowboy art" that I've decided to allow myself to be
succumbed by my own Western expressions.

I went to the High Noon exhibition at the Civic Center
and enclose a few images from it.
Email me if you'd like more images from that exhibition.

Repose

6" x 6" Oil on masonite study

Honestly, I forgot my paint palette at the open session, and had only
white and a tint with a dirty rag from the day at Bulldog Canyon. I was
able to get some pretty good color from the rag for contrast. I tried a little
monoprint technique, of wiping away for the highlights, as well as painting
directly into image.
