Vermont Autumn Farm

6 x 8 inches Oil on canvas (3/4" stretchers)

The location of my final plein air class today. Demo above showing back light coming through maple trees and on the willows. The sun was intermittent as it rained lightly for 10 minutes.
It was in low 50's today so we all had coats on and gloves.
I admit it ~ it was penetrating cold by 6 pm when we were done. You never know with Vermont fall foliage what the temperature will be. The colors are going to be great this year as they are turning slowly and sustaining their color.

And on to preparing wood panels

Trying out some different grounds and framing in my shop.

A Tribute to Democracy in Vermont

If the spirit of liberty should vanish in other parts of the Union and support of our institutions should languish it could all be replenished from the generous store held by the people of this brave little state of Vermont.

Alone on a Sofa

18 x 24 inches Oil on canvas

$225 +S/H

This was discovered when I set up my open studio in August.
It's not bad, but not exactly what you'd want on the wall over the sofa!
Maybe it needs a sleeping cat painted in...

I read a poignant entry on painting that matters by my Vermont painter friend David Smith
from last January I'd like to share " I was reading about Bruce Springsteen, something about his desire to create 'durable' songs. Art is a product of the time it was created in, but I liked that utilitarian description of his, art meant to stand on its own, weathering changing times and interactions with changing audiences. That's what all of us makers of things would like, to make something durable."

Long Legged Nude

14 x 14 Inches Oil on 1.5 deep cradled birch

Working with contrasts starting with the darks.
The landscapes this week were losing contrasts, so I specifically wanted to create a more dramatic setting. It was fun to chat with Billy Brauer who's back after losing the top of his left index finger in a table saw accident 2 weeks ago, and Frank Woods who was set up next to me on the table doing charcoal.
Cora Brooks gave me a returned postcard she had painted of a dove on one side, that was written last Dec 2008 to me. She said something like Happy Moose kiss and have good Holly daze...etc.. She found it while she was going through her papers and writings that HARVARD LIBRARY have accepted for their archives! Go Cora. (anyone want a sharp buy ...Cora's selling her 2 houses next door to each other in Chelsea, Vermont for $275,000. Classic New England capes.. She's moved to Montpelier)

Von Trapp Cow Study ~ go to 3.18.10

5 x 7 inches Oil on canvas board

(go to 3.19.10 for continued version)

This is a fifteen minute study I decided to do while I was driving past. I thought I should come back some day this time in the late afternoon to paint these wonderful cows, and something made me stop right then. I had an extra 20 minutes I figured to paint something about a cow. But I must tell you, they are moving right along the slope eating their way from one end to the other. So the direction it started was not what the pose remained! So to do a longer pose wouldn't actually be so easy. Then I realized a bunch were lying down. I'll have to go for one of those next time. It's fun to talk to them while you're painting. They are good listeners and frequently look up.

Green Mts Over Pond

6 x 12 inches Oil on canvas board

$99 + S/H

Something got soupy about the mass of trees here. It may in part be the photo itself. It was a great vista of the Green Mountains as seen across a pond and beautifully cleared land.

Desert Palms

6 x 6 inches Oil on birch

$125 + S/H

Same location as yesterday near Thousand Palms. These were the first Washington Palms I ever saw (I think they were called?)in California that were so different after visiting my parents in Florida many years, and seeing the scrawny pruned palms, these unpruned seemed so majestic! They resembled Lion manes to me. Very regal and stately in a group.

Mountains in Rain

7 x 22 inches Oil on birch

OOps, I've misplaced my camera, so I'm digging into archives to post until I find it!
~It's hiding~
I was standing by my car with light drizzle in the mountains, on a back highway that had this beautiful view of these incredible mountains that I was searching for a good spot to paint.

After getting out of car, there was trash that had been tossed out of people's windows driving by for years. From diapers to cans to plastic wrappers of every kind. There was a fence for animals somewhere and all the time I just kept hoping the truckers whizzing past wouldn't be interested in me painting and stop to look. I've never really painted in such a remote spot since. I kept close to my car just to feel I had a refuge in case. The trash all over just gave me the sense of people not caring about anyone else. This was east of Palm Springs near Thousand Palms.

Blueberry Lake Reflection

12 x 12 inches Oil on wood

I cropped each of these and didn't realize there was one done earlier. So here's to show how differently editing can affect the end result as a picture!

I'd better choose the color corrected one !

18th Green

8 x 10 inches Oil on canvas board

Detail with duck diving

This was done a while back, in California at a Rancho Mirage golf course standing by a blooming lemon tree that filled the air with such ambrosia, it was divine. Painting water, ducks diving, next to the 18th green, seeing the reflection of palm trees and the mountains in the water. It was pretty sublime.
